June 8th is Ghostbusters Day, marking the release date of the original film in 1984. Thirty three years later, and this movie is still making an impact on the world around us.
With the 30th anniversary of the original film in 2014 and the release of GB: Answer the Call in 2016, there has been a pke-surge of activity in the fandom! Sony created Ghost Corps along with Ivan Reitman and others, and invited franchises to apply to become “Official Franchises”. More and more groups started popping up, different franchises started talking to each other more, and there it was a really good thing for the fandom we love! Ghost Corps held events, and invited some franchises to come out for the premiere of the movie in Los Angeles!
The momentum hasn’t really died down, either! The new movie helped reintroduce the general population to Ghostbusters, and a lot of us saw an increase in events and appearances. Groups started doing more community service and fundraising for some great causes as well!
There is a strong sense of community in the fandom, and we love interacting with each other (PKESurge! at DragonCon is one of our big get togethers). It’s like a really large dysfunctional family, brought together by this one amazing thing we all love.
From everyone here at the Houston Ghostbusters, we wish you happy Ghostbusters Day 2017!
